Before incorporating a new product into your daily skincare routine, it&#8217;s a good idea to check how your skin will react to it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We know how tempting it is to try a new cosmetic product right away, especially when you&#8217;re looking for something that will suit your baby&#8217;s sensitive skin. However, if you or your child have sensitive skin, atopic dermatitis, or skin prone to irritation, trying new products should be done with caution.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will the product suit the skin? Will it cause redness, itching, or additional irritation?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why the <strong>patch test exists: a simple way to check how skin tolerates a new cosmetic product before applying it to a larger area.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although cosmetic products <strong>must undergo safety assessments and dermatological testing before being placed on the market, it&#8217;s important to know that every skin is unique.<\/strong> Even carefully formulated products with safe and proven ingredients, free of fragrances, essential oils, and other potential irritants, can cause an unwanted reaction in some individuals.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a patch test?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A patch test is a procedure where a small amount of a new cosmetic product is applied to a limited area of the skin to check its tolerability.<\/strong> The goal is to observe possible signs of irritation or hypersensitivity before you start using the product on a larger area of the body.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s important to distinguish a home tolerability test from a dermatological epicutaneous test (<em>patch test<\/em>) which dermatologists use to diagnose contact allergies. Home testing can help identify certain unwanted reactions, but it cannot definitively rule out an allergy.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is a patch test important?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our skin has an important protective function. The skin barrier prevents excessive water loss and protects the skin from external influences, irritants, and potential allergens.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In individuals with sensitive skin or skin prone to atopy, the skin barrier is often compromised, making the skin more susceptible to moisture loss and external stimuli. That&#8217;s why introducing new cosmetic products requires extra attention, especially for children with atopic dermatitis or highly reactive skin.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Regardless of how high-quality, carefully formulated, or dermatologically tested a product is, an individual skin reaction is always possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s important to know that irritation and an allergic reaction are not the same. Irritation can occur due to the action of a specific ingredient on sensitive or damaged skin, while allergic contact dermatitis involves an immune system reaction to a specific allergen.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, the natural origin of ingredients does not automatically mean that a certain ingredient cannot cause irritation or allergy.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to perform a patch test correctly? Step-by-step<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Home tolerability testing is simple and does not require special equipment. However, it&#8217;s important to know that there isn&#8217;t one procedure that can reliably rule out all types of reactions to cosmetics.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Choose an appropriate skin area<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For testing, select a small area of healthy skin, such as the inner forearm or the crook of the elbow. It&#8217;s important that the skin in the chosen area is not damaged, severely irritated, or affected by active eczema.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Apply a small amount of product<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apply a small amount of product, about the size of a pea, in a thin layer to the selected area. If you are testing a cream or another product that remains on the skin, leave it on for 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it&#8217;s a rinse-off product, like a bath gel, apply and rinse it according to the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Wait 24 hours and observe the skin&#8217;s reaction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the first application, monitor the area for the next 30 minutes, but also for several hours to spot any possible reactions. If severe redness, stinging, itching, a rash, or intense irritation occurs, the product may not be compatible with the skin and you should not use it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If <strong>there is no reaction within 24 hours, you can use the product normally<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When do I recommend a patch test?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I always recommend a patch test when a product is used for the first time on babies and children, for skin prone to atopy and other skin conditions, if there is a history of allergies or if the skin has already reacted to certain cosmetic products, and when introducing products with new active ingredients. It is especially important to introduce new products one by one.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you start using several new products simultaneously, it will be much harder to identify which one caused any unwanted reaction.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Should a patch test be done even for products intended for atopic and sensitive skin?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, an additional tolerability check can be useful even when a product is specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
