fb Fragrances in Baby Cosmetics – Why It's Better to Avoid Them - Pipo Laboratorie

It’s a parental instinct to seek the gentlest and safest products for a baby. Yet, most commercial baby care lines still contain fragrance – whether of natural or synthetic origin. Below, we explain why you don’t need them in your care routine, how to recognize fragrances on the label, and why all Pipo Laboratorie products are formulated completely fragrance-free.

What are fragrances in cosmetics and why are they added?

Fragrances have a role in skin care. They can be used to give a product a pleasant smell, to mask unpleasant raw material odors, or they can have a functional purpose, such as product preservation.

Whether of natural or synthetic origin, they contain some of the most potent allergens. And for both, the name “parfum” appears in the INCI composition. Also, essential oils and aromas contain fragrances and certain allergens. Therefore, products that do not contain ingredients classified as fragrances may have a lower risk of causing allergies and irritations.

Synthetic fragrances are linked to long-term health problems, especially those found on endocrine disruptor lists. It is essential to learn how to recognize these harmful substances on product labels. If a product has “sweet baby” packaging and smells like “baby,” it is certainly not a criterion that should influence product purchase. Manufacturers generally do not want to disclose the exact fragrance formulation because it is, in a way, a trade secret, especially the concentration of fragrances in the product.

An allergen is a substance that causes an allergic reaction. The most common problems associated with fragrant ingredients, whether through perfumes, aromas, or essential oils, are allergies and skin irritations. For a fragrant substance to cause a skin allergy, a certain minimum amount of that substance must penetrate the skin and bind to a skin protein. Only when the fragrant substance binds to a skin protein can it initiate a chain of events in our immune system that ultimately lead to allergy symptoms.

However, skin reactions cannot necessarily be attributed exclusively to fragrant ingredients in a product. This effect also depends on the irritant and allergenic potential of other ingredients and their concentrations in the product.

Even in natural cosmetics, we can find many allergens, especially if they contain essential oils, which we mentioned are potentially strong allergens. This must be indicated in the product composition (e.g., it says linalool, limonene, citral, and similar).

Why choose fragrance-free products for your children?

A baby’s skin differs from adult skin; it is about 5 times thinner and requires special attention and care. Its protective hydrolipidic barrier is not yet fully developed, making it more susceptible to irritations and external influences, including ingredients in cosmetic products. Fragrances, even natural ones, can cause redness, rashes, or allergic reactions.

That’s why your baby needs products that are free of dyes, fragrances, certain harmful preservatives, and other potentially harmful substances. It is very important to educate yourself about such ingredients and learn to read the INCI composition of products.

A fragrance-free product means it does not contain components classified as fragrances, but it may have a natural scent due to certain raw materials. Such products are a much better choice for children with sensitive skin.

Babies love the natural scent of their parents

Babies rely on their sense of smell to recognize their mother, feel secure, and connected. Strong cosmetic fragrances can confuse or irritate a baby, disrupting this natural sense of closeness and affecting how they interact with their environment.

Less is more – especially in baby care

At Pipo, we embrace the “less is more” philosophy. This means: a minimal number of ingredients, no unnecessary additives, no fragrances, and no irritants. Our products contain only what baby’s skin truly needs – such as natural oils, soothing plant extracts, and mild plant-based surfactants.

That’s why ALL our products are formulated completely fragrance-free.

In conclusion

Fragrances are not always necessarily bad, BUT a baby’s already very sensitive and immature skin can be much more reactive to them, which can lead to allergies, irritations, and eczema. I believe such a risk is unnecessary, and by choosing fragrance-free products, you reduce the possibility of long-term skin problems and allow your baby to explore the world undisturbed – with your scents, not synthetic ones.
